Brief description

[Posting slightly edited after it was posted to add some info on the scaling experience they're looking for.]

This is an early (7th person) role at a dev tools startup building an abstraction layer for external integrations. For example, they might allow a recruiting company like us to integrate with multiple clients' ATSes without having to build separate tooling for each one.

The job sits somewhere in the gray area between a standard back-end role and a platform engineer, and deals with fairly high scale (on the order of 1k-10k requests/sec). It's more typical back-end in that actually building the integrations is an important part of what they do, and it's a pseudo-platform role in that you're building infra for other developers (just external ones, not an internal team). Like most roles at this early stage, expect a highly independent role with very little structure or guidance. Since this is a tooling company, expect some product ownership speaking with external users and spending time figuring out what they need and how best to build it.

Culturally, they're long on independence, robustness, and low ego relative to the typical startup culture, and shorter on work hours and highly specific pedigree details.

This is a remote role for a remote-first company. They work roughly western-European hours, and expect core hours of 8 AM to 12 PM Eastern time (that's 5 AM-9 AM Pacific time, or 2 PM-6 PM Central Europe time. Other work hours can lie on either side of this range, but this may not be a good fit for people who live and want to remain on the west coast of the Americas unless you're an early riser.

What they're looking for

[Required]

  • 10+ years of experience, down to ~5 if you've dealt with scaling challenges at a startup before

  • Familiar with Node/Typescript

  • Familiar with significant scaling challenges (on the order of 1k-10k requests/sec)

  • Open to their core-hours window (see brief description, above)

  • A focus on dev experience (for their external users, presumably)

  • The usual independence/organization skills needed for a low-structure role

[Nice-to-have]

  • Experience at a small company (<25 people) - if not, some strong signal that you're able and willing to work within a fast-moving environment and not e.g. prematurely-optimize.

  • Experience with dev tools or SaaS

  • Previous experience at remote-first companies

  • Experience working with infra/back-end in the context of banking/finance, B2C, or data infra startups at series A+ scale.

What they're offering

  • Salary: $120-200k.

  • Equity: Higher than normal for a 7th hire, 0.25-1.00%

  • Fully remote with travel-friendly hours - work from a Parisian café today, a Norwegian fjord tomorrow, and the Virgin Islands the day after that, if you want.

  • Highly technical team (5/6 of current team are engineers themselves)
